In response to the request of the rehabilitation needs of the polio resurgence patients, the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department has initiated a program which includes the physiatric assessment, physical therapy, and referral to other agencies for the procurement of orthosis/assistive device of the children in need. This program, is in cooperation with the Center for Health Development SOCCSKSARGEN Region, Cotabato Regional and Medical Center and Ministry of Health BARMM. During initial assessment last January 24, 2020 and February 12, 2020, 4 out of 7 children from Maguindanao that need orthoses and 2 need wheelchairs. Further, 2 in 9 cases in Region 12 needs prosthesis.
Last February 21, 2020 Dr. Josephine Bundoc, the proponents who initiated the PHIC benefits for Rehabilitation Medicine not only involved physical assessment of the post polio clients but also took the opportunity to discussed among Persons with Disabilities Association Officers (PDAOs) in provinces of Maguindanao, North Cotabato, and Cotabato City, the mandatory PhilHealth coverage of PWDs (RA 11228), and the exclusive packages that will address the PWDs specific health and developmental needs.
A great gratitude to Dr. Josephine R. Bundoc of Physicians for Peace (PFP), Team of UERM School of Prosthetics & Orthotics/UP PGH for the assessment and provision of the assistive devices and to Dr. Jhoana Marie Zambrano of Regional and Medical Center for making this activity possible with no boundaries.
