The Department of Health - Center for Health Development (DOH-CHD) SOCCSKSARGEN Region and City Health Office (CHO) kicked off Wednesday the "Chikiting Ligtas" Supplemental Immunization Activity (SIA) campaign for Measles Rubella - Oral Polio Vaccine (MR-OPV) at Robinsons Place in General Santos City as parents and their children queued to take advantage of the nationwide vaccination for free.

During the launching, Health Undersecretary Abdullah B. Dumama, Jr. led the ceremonial vaccination of the MR-OPV vaccines to children below 5 years old, and reiterated that the vaccines are very safe, effective, and free.

"Hindi ho ito binigyan ng pagkakataon na magkaroon ng konting flaws o pagkakamali, lahat ho ito ay pinag-aralan nang mabuti, nang matagal, at masigasig na binigyan ng pansin ng ating mga dalubhasa. Huwag ho kayong matatakot," he said.

DOH-CHD XII Regional Director Dr. Aristides Concepcion Tan also encouraged the parents to submit their kids for immunization and expressed his hope for a successful SIA, which aims to attain 95% of children to be at least immunized in General Santos City.

Meanwhile, Acting City Health Officer Dr. Lalaine Calonzo thanked heath officials led by Usec. Dumama, Jr. and RD Tan for personally attending the Gensan's SIA launching. She also expressed her gratitude to Provincial DOH SarGen Officer Dr. Shahrir B. Duldoco, Regional Immunization Program Manager Dr. Jane Montañer, DOH XII Chief of Local Health Support Division Dr. Amabella Taruc, Sarangani Provincial Health Officer Dr. Arvin Alejandro, CHO National Immunization Program Coordinator Dr. Karl Ivan Daryl Igrobay, Councilor Elizabeth Bagonoc, Brgy. Lagao Councilor Engr. Michael Tanzo, Executive Assistant to the city mayor Johnrex Galdo representing Mayor Lorelie G. Pacquiao, Red Cross Philippines, and the Philippine Information Agency Region XII.

Lastly, Dr. Calonzo underscored the importance of parents showing concern through their participation in the SIA, emphasizing to them that vaccinating children against MR-polio can save lives and help “build, mold, and solidify healthy Generals.

The Chikiting Ligtas nationwide immunization activity will run until May 31.
