The South Cotabato Provincial Health Office headed by Dr. Rogelio B. Aturdido together with the Health Education and Promotion Officers of PHO-South Cotabato Province and our HEPO Staff conducted an Orientation on Dengue Awareness and Clean-up Drive on October 13, 2015 at Tupi central Elementary School in Tupi, South Cotabato Province and Koronadal Central Elementary School in Koronadal City on October 14, 2015, respectively. These activities were collaborated with the Department of Education through the active participation of the school division officials, teachers and students.
The orientation started right after the Flag Ceremony where Dr. Aturdido talked about the 4-S Kontra Dengue (the 4 o'clock Habit); Dengue-carrier Mosquito, Aedes Egypti species that will breed anywhere specifically in an open receptacles with water, unused tires, clogged gutters, empty bottles, plants and the like. The search and destroy of possible mosquito breeding places within the school surroundings was done at 4:00 o'clock before going home as part of the one-hour Clean-up Drive activity.

With the theme, “ Sa Ingay Walang Sablay, sa Paputok Goodbye Kamay”, the Department of Health officially commences this year’s anti firecracker campaign. Together with the Department of Interior and Local Government, Department of Education, Philippine National Police, Bureau of Fire Protection and Eco Waste Coalition, the agency’s campaign encourages the public to avoid the use of firecrackers and make use of alternative ways in celebrating Christmas; and welcoming the New Year. It also reminds all Filipinos to have fun yet be vigilant at the same time.
According to Health Secretary Janette P. Loreto-Garin, “For this year, instead of firecrackers, the public is encouraged to use safe merry-making instruments and alternative noise-makers such as ‘torotot’, car horns, or by playing loud music. Also, the local government units (LGUs) are urged to foster community fireworks display.” She also emphasized the earnest cooperation of the LGUs and the public to achieve zero casualty in welcoming 2016.

In June 24, 2015, about 15 Fishing Corporations based in General Santos City and Sarangani Province including medium-scale fishing operators’ such as Frabelle Fishing Corporation, RD Fishing Corporation, Mommy Gina Tuna Resources, etc. respond to a call of invitation to talk partnership to combat imported malaria cases coming from Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and King Solomon Island and also to established malaria control program in company’s working place. Companies were mostly represented by company doctor, nurse, safety measure and health officer, administrative officer, etc. Discussions evolved on malaria status, economic impact and role of business coalition in malaria elimination.

The resurgence of malaria cases in Sitio San Vicente, Barangay Masiag, Bagumbayan, Sultan Kudarat prompted the DOH Regional Office, Malaria Elimination and Control Program to conduct on-site training on Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) operation to barangay volunteers in the said municipality. A total of eight (8) barangay volunteers were trained last October 20, 2015 which was held at Sitio San Vicente, Barangay Masiag, Bagumbayan.
The activity was done in collaboration with the Municipal Health Office of Bagumnbayan headed by Dr. Raul V. Manansala, Municipal Health Officer in partnership with the barangay officials and sitio leaders of Barangay Masiag led by Barangay Captain Greg M. Lagnaoda. The day after the training, the spray team started their operation in which they have to cover 24 sitios and puroks with an estimated number of 1,544 houses with a target population of 7,513. The spraying operations will end on November 11, 2015. DOH Regional Office XII allotted Php1,181,250.00 for insecticides (excluding payment of traveling expenses and per diems of team leader and spraymen).
